Why is the death of gamer "Fat Cat" trending in China?

On chinese social media, a young man named "fat cat" in china took his own life by leaping over a bridge in chongqing, sparking a perfect storm as people were preparing to move forward from the tragic death and all its implications.

Liu, a 20-year-old man who was better known by his game name "fat cat," died by his own hand in the small hours of 11 april 2024, and his death was reported to be related to video games for others as a hobby.

Liu and his mother broke up with him, and he lent all of his money to her before jumping, as many assumed she was operating a confidence scam on him.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of people from around china bought takeaway meals and drinks to take to the bridge in honor of "fat cat," the ultimate everyman, while dark corners of the internet continued their mourning period.

The police said in may that the op-eds had been banned from reporting the death until this month.

On weibo,.

This sparked a lot of backlash on the internet, with many people still believe that liu's girlfriend, even if not a scammer, was wasted on the bridge.

Accuses of "" attempting to skew the story soared quickly, while others pointed out that this is another case of online misogyny that women face every day.
